Veteran Bollywood actor Govind Namdev has publicly distanced himself from the controversial upcoming film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy, claiming the producers completely misled him about the project’s true intent. Speaking to media outlet Amar Ujala, the 71-year-old actor revealed that he initially signed on believing he was working on a movie titled Sambhal. While he was later informed that the title would change to Kala Hiran, producers assured him the film would strictly focus on recorded, real-life courtroom proceedings from Salman Khan’s infamous 1998 blackbuck poaching case.
However, the release of the film’s promotional teaser left the actor shocked. Namdev expressed his deep discomfort, stating that he was shaken to the core upon seeing the footage. He alleged that the actors were kept entirely in the dark and that there is a world of difference between what he shot and what was actually made. Namdev emphasized that the filmmakers never disclosed that a character resembling Salman Khan would be created and misrepresented in such a manner, making him feel as though his presence was weaponized under false pretenses.
Clarifying his personal stance, the veteran actor noted that his involvement was supposed to be limited to a single, lengthy courtroom sequence based purely on documented legal files. Namdev made it clear that he shares a very cordial professional relationship with Salman Khan and would never knowingly participate in a project designed to tarnish the superstar’s image. He also firmly rejected any narrative linking him to the Bishnoi community or gang references associated with the controversy, stating he could never idealize such groups.
The film has found itself at the epicenter of a massive legal storm due to its blatant parallels to Salman Khan’s life. Although the makers claim the project is a work of fiction, the teaser features a character named “Ayaan Khan” (played by Kashif Iqbal Khan) who mirrors the Bollywood superstar’s exact physical appearance, clothing style, accessories, and distinct mannerisms.
The situation escalated dramatically after Salman Khan and his legal team approached the Delhi High Court seeking an immediate and permanent injunction against the film’s production, promotion, and release. Khan’s lawyers argue that the movie severely violates his personality and publicity rights while damaging his reputation by distorting an active legal matter. In response, the high court has officially issued notices to the filmmakers demanding a formal reply.
