Eros Seeks ₹84 Crore Damages from Aanand L Rai and Colour Yellow Over Tere Ishk Mein Alleged ‘Spiritual Sequel’ to Raanjhanaa

The legal battle between Aanand L Rai and Eros International has reignited in 2026, this time concerning the Dhanush-Kriti Sanon film Tere Ishk Mein (2025). Eros International Media has filed a commercial intellectual property suit in the Bombay High Court, accusing Aanand L Rai and his production house, Colour Yellow Media Entertainment LLP, of trademark and copyright infringement
.Eros alleges that Tere Ishk Mein was deliberately marketed as a ‘spiritual sequel’ to the 2013 hit Raanjhanaa without their authorization. According to a Bombay Times report, Eros is demanding damages of ₹84 crores. The lawsuit also names T-Series, writer Himanshu Sharma, and OTT partner Netflix among the respondents.
In their petition, Eros asserts ownership of all intellectual property rights related to Raanjhanaa, including copyrights, registered trademarks, character rights (notably for ‘Kundan Shankar’ and ‘Murari’), and exclusive remake, prequel, and sequel rights. They claim these rights were violated during the promotion and release of Tere Ishk Mein.
A major point of contention is the Tere Ishk Mein announcement video, which included the phrase “From the world of Raanjhanaa.” Eros further claims the teaser unlawfully used footage, background score, and music from Raanjhanaa, despite no longer holding music rights. The suit highlights the similarities between Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub’s characters in both films, stating: “Murari… is a sharp-witted friend whose perspective adds conscience to the plot. The respondents’ unauthorized use of these characters infringes on the applicant’s exclusive rights.”
At the same time, the lead character Shankar in Tere Ishk Mein is said to closely resemble Raanjhanaa’s Kundan in emotional journey and themes. Eros issued a cease-and-desist notice in July 2025 and follow-up reminders, leading to the removal of Raanjhanaa references from promotional material. However, upon viewing the film, Eros alleges continued “extensive” copyright and trademark violations, asserting Tere Ishk Mein is still positioned as a spiritual sequel without permission.
