We all knew the OTT platform ALT Balaji Telefilm to be Ekta Kapoor’s venture for digital content. However, after the recent Indian government’s crackdown on 24 OTT platforms including the said one which is accused of broadcasting explicit content, things are different from Ekta Kapoor’s side. One of the platforms named was ALTT, formerly known as ALTBalaji.
Amid widespread speculation and media reports, Balaji Telefilms Limited has issued a firm clarification, distancing producer Ekta Kapoor and her mother Shobha Kapoor from the platform.In an official statement released on July 26, Balaji Telefilms highlighted that it is a “professionally run media organization” listed on both the BSE and NSE stock exchanges. The company confirmed that ALTT is now operated exclusively by Balaji Telefilms, following the approved merger of ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd. with the parent company as of June 20, 2025.
No Longer Associated Since 2021
The clarification was prompted by media reports suggesting ALTT had been disabled by authorities but still maintained connections with Ekta and Shobha Kapoor. Balaji Telefilms categorically denied these claims, stating, “Contrary to such reports, Ms. Ekta Kapoor and Mrs. Shobha Kapoor are not associated in any capacity whatsoever with ALTT.” The company emphasized that both had officially stepped down from their roles in June 2021. She posted a long clarification on social media denying any links with the same OTT platform, check her message she posted on her Instagram handle;
Balaji Telefilms urged the media to report responsibly, stressing the importance of factual accuracy and rejecting any insinuations linking the Kapoores to the current ban. This controversy follows an order from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting earlier this week, which instructed internet service providers to block 24 OTT platforms accused of distributing vulgar or sexually explicit content. The move has sparked widespread debate about content regulation and the responsibilities of digital media providers in India.
