Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Secures Massive 2,500+ Screen Release in India; Sells 91,000 IMAX Tickets Ahead of ₹20 Crore Opening Target

With only a few days left before its global premiere, the box-office anticipation for Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic The Odyssey has reached a fever pitch in India. The pre-release hype reached new heights following a high-profile Mumbai promotional visit by Nolan alongside lead stars Tom Holland and Matt Damon.

Capitalizing on the immense buzz, exhibitors opened advance ticket sales exceptionally early on June 8—well over a month ahead of the theatrical launch.

Record-Breaking Advance Ticket Sales

According to ticketing data accessed by Bollywood Hungama, The Odyssey has already sold approximately 1.25 lakh tickets for Day 1 alone across national multiplex chains, including 50,000 tickets at PVR Inox and 12,000 at Cinepolis. Total weekend advance sales have already comfortably crossed the 2.50 lakh tickets milestone.

The IMAX Phenomenon

Christopher Nolan’s films are traditionally treated as event cinema, but The Odyssey holds a unique cinematic distinction: it is the first feature film in history to be shot entirely using IMAX cameras. This technological milestone has driven unprecedented demand for premium formats:

91,000 tickets snapped up across India’s 34 available IMAX screens. ₹9.5 crore generated from the premium format alone before the film even debuts.

Chasing the ‘Oppenheimer’ Benchmark

The industry is closely watching to see if The Odyssey can eclipse the massive box-office benchmarks set by Nolan’s previous blockbuster, Oppenheimer (2023):

Trade analysts project The Odyssey to comfortably outpace those numbers. Early box-office tracking predicts a domestic opening day of ₹17–18 crore, with a highly probable surge toward a ₹20 crore opening if the final leg of advance bookings maintains its current momentum.

Massive Screen Count Distribution

Reflecting the massive demand from exhibitors, The Odyssey is locked for a wide release across 2,500+ screens in India. This marks a substantial theatrical footprint expansion compared to Oppenheimer, which played on 1,923 screens domestically.

A Blockbuster July for Indian Exhibitors

The mega-release ensures that July will be a remarkably lucrative month for Indian theater owners. Following the massive box-office run of the domestic comedy sequel Dhamaal 4, the arrival of The Odyssey looks to keep theaters packed. The month is slated to end on a similarly high note with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is already reporting electrifying early advance ticket trends.
