Abundantia Entertainment, led by Vikram Malhotra, and Almighty Motion Picture, headed by Prabhleen Sandhu, have joined forces to produce a new feature film titled Heavy Metal. The project is based on Ameer Shahul’s investigative book, Heavy Metal: How a Global Corporation Poisoned Kodaikanal. The film is currently in pre-production, with casting underway and shooting scheduled to begin soon.
The movie will explore the famous mercury contamination incident in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu. The controversy centers on a thermometer factory operated by Hindustan Unilever, which faced major allegations in 2001 regarding the illegal dumping of toxic mercury waste.
Over the years, the situation turned into a massive public campaign involving former factory workers, local residents, environmental activists, and Greenpeace. The disaster gained global attention, sparking widespread debate about worker safety, corporate ethics, and environmental justice.
Designed as an intense corporate-environmental thriller, the film will focus on the human impact of the tragedy. It tells the story through the eyes of the affected community while exposing unsafe industrial practices. The creators are drawing stylistic inspiration from acclaimed real-life investigative dramas like Erin Brockovich, Dark Waters, and Chernobyl.
