Aamir Khan Opens Up: Farhan Akhtar Was the First Choice for Taare Zameen Par, Says ‘I Was Heartbroken…’

Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par is the most adored movie of 2025 because of its heartwarming story, profound emotional content, and outstanding performances.

In addition to being a box office success, Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par is the most adored movie of 2025 because of its heartwarming story, profound emotional content, and outstanding performances. With 10 young debutants making their cinematic debuts under the auspices of Aamir Khan Productions, the film, which was a spiritual follow-up to Taare Zameen Par, brought in a new generation of talent. Aamir, who portrayed a basketball coach in the film, received a lot of praise for his sincere performance.

But in a recent interview, Aamir revealed candidly that he wasn’t originally slated to play the lead in the movie. Farhan Akhtar, an actor and filmmaker, was really the initial option for the part. In fact, Farhan was meant to do it. When Laal Singh Chaddha didn’t do well, I became emotionally upset—in fact, I was broken. I decided to take a sabbatical and not work on a movie for a time because I felt like I needed a break,” Aamir said.

At the time, Aamir Khan had chosen to only be involved in the film’s production, leaving R. S. Prasanna in charge of directing. But as the crew worked on the screenplay and the readings went on, Aamir kept being amazed by how good the tale was. He recalls thinking, “This script is so good, why is he not acting in it?” before he finally took the camera once more.

In what is now recognized as one of the banner’s most moving pieces, Sitaare Zameen Par continues his partnership with Aamir Khan Productions under the direction of R. S. Prasanna, well known for his socially aware hit Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. Along with a number of debutants, including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar, the film also features Genelia Deshmukh in a leading role.

With lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya and music composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the film’s soundtrack has struck a deep chord with audiences, complementing the emotional highs and lows of the story. The screenplay was penned by Divy Nidhi Sharma, and the film was produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit, along with Ravi Bhagchandka.

Released in theatres on June 20, 2025, Sitaare Zameen Par continues to shine — both for its heartfelt storytelling and for the touching behind-the-scenes stories that shaped its journey to the big screen.
