100th Anniversary Tribute: Shah Rukh Khan Wanted to Play Guru Dutt, Called His Face “a Beautiful Poem in B&W”; Aamir Khan Was Also Approached for Biopic Scripted by Anurag Kashyap

July 9 marks the 100th birth anniversary of Guru Dutt, one of Indian cinema’s most iconic and influential figures. Despite passing away tragically young at just 38, Guru Dutt’s lasting impact on film remains unparalleled. Even 60 years after his death, his work continues to inspire and captivate audiences and filmmakers alike. In fact, some of Bollywood’s biggest stars have expressed interest in portraying him if a biopic is ever made.
Back on March 22, 2016, a journalist tweeted that the story of Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt was “ripe for a sensitive biopic made by say Imtiaz Ali or Mani Ratnam,” suggesting that no one else but Shah Rukh Khan (@iamsrk) could capture the complex emotions of anger, romance, and devastation that defined Guru Dutt. Shah Rukh Khan enthusiastically responded, “Absolutely. I should do it. And as u lovingly say my friend my face is like a beautiful poem…in black & white.”
Less than a year later, during promotions for his film Raees in January 2017, rumors surfaced about Shah Rukh Khan playing legendary poet Sahir Ludhianvi in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali biopic titled Gustakhiyan. While SRK remained silent on that project, he told Hindustan Times that if he ever did a biopic, he’d love to portray Guru Dutt’s life.
Meanwhile, superstar Aamir Khan had his own unique tribute to Guru Dutt. Alongside Katrina Kaif, he recreated the iconic Pyaasa (1957) pose of Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman for CineBlitz Gold’s coffee-table book Love & Longing in Hindi Cinema, celebrating the magazine’s 35th anniversary. Though rumors swirled about a remake of the classic tragic saga, it was clarified that it was a photoshoot project.
Reflecting on the experience, Aamir said, “I looked at the photograph (of Pyaasa) very closely and tried to be in that headspace…to understand what I could feel from watching Guru Dutt ji in that moment.” Filmmaker Karan Johar, present at the event, praised Aamir’s portrayal, saying, “When I saw the image, I thought they were coming up with a film on Guru Dutt’s life, which I think is a brilliant idea!”
As the centenary of Guru Dutt’s birth is celebrated, his legacy continues to inspire and remains deeply cherished across the film fraternity and audiences alike.
