Tabu was born with the name Tabassum Fatima Hashmi on 4th November 1971 is a popular actress who primarily work in Hindi movies apart from the south Indian films along with English, Marathi and Bengali movies. Tabu was born to Jamal Hashmi & Rizwana, however, her parents separated after she was born and was very young. Her mother brought up her without seeking any help from her father who was a schoolteacher. She did her schooling from St. Anns High School from Hyderabad. In 1983 she headed to Bombay for her further studies and joined St. Xaviers College. She is the niece of Baba & Shabana Azmi. She has an elder brother Farah Naaz who is also an actress in TV and films.
She started her career in the eighties with the small appearance in the movie called Bazaar in the year 1980. She then was seen in the film called Hum Naujawan in 1985 working along with Dev Anand. She then was seen in a Telugu movie from Coolie No 1. She then appeared in Boney Kapoor’s film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja along with Anil Kapoor and Sri Devi, which became her launching film in Bollywood. She then got her next film Pehla Pehla Pyar, which was a flop film, followed by another called Vijaypath with Ajay Devgn. It turned a hit over the box office giving away her the FIlmfare Award for Best Debut Film. It took long for Tabu to get a bright career in Bollywood.
Since then it was no looking back for her and she did a number of movies, which include Saajan Chale Sasural, Jeet, Maachis, etc. For the latter she was even awarded the National Award for the best actress category. The very same year her Malayalam period drama Kalapani became a big hit adding another feather in her cap.
Some of her acclaimed movies include Hera Pheri, Astitva, Border, Chandni Bar, Hu Tu Tu, Virasat, Cheeni Kum etc. Some of her recent movies include Haider and Dhrisyam. Her upcoming film is Fitoor, which she is doing with Katrina Kaif wherein she would be playing the character of Begam. As far as her awards are concerned, she has received two National Film Award under Best Actress category for her films like Maachis in 1996 and Chandni Bar in 2001. She got Filmfare Awards four times for the Best Actress Critics along with several other awards for the South Indian films as well. For Haider, she was nominated under the category of Supporting Actress and Best Jodi at all the prestigious and could managed to get away with Screen and IIFA Awards.
As far as her personal life is concerned, she is a life member of a group called International Club of Asian Academy of Film and TV based in Noida. She was charges for poaching case for two blackbucks in Rajasthan while shooting for the film Hum Saath Saath Hai along with her co-stars like Salman Khan, Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, Karishma Kapoor and Neelam. She was summoned for the case a couple of times but finally the case was discharged. She is considered to be one of the most talented actress of B Town and known for not discussing about her personal life in media. She is regarded as an introvert person hence one may not find her much on the Page 3 of any gossip magazines or tabloids.
